Ranaghat, Sept. 14: The CID has slapped murder charge against BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar and also accused him as one of the conspirators in the supplementary charge sheet it filed before the ACJM court in Ranaghat on Monday in connection with the murder of Trinamul MLA Satyajit Biswas.

The investigating agency has, however, sought more time from to submit its findings of BJP leader Mukul Roy, terming him as a ‘suspect’ in the case since his name figured in the FIR along with other accused. The Ranaghat ACJM court has granted 3 months’ time CID for the job.

Accused BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar termed the development as a ‘conspiracy’ to malign him politically.

On May 8 last year, CID filed the first charge sheet in the MLA murder case. But, CID dropped the two BJP leaders’ names were from the charge sheet. Relying upon the said charge sheet the ACJM on June 14 issued an order discharging them of the allegations of involvement in the murder which prompted the original complainant Milan Saha, a Trinamul activist to file a revision application urging the court for a further investigation to examine their alleged roles in the murder.

Responding to the application ADSJ Ranaghat on December 16 set aside the ACJM’s order and allowed partial investigation restricting the scope of ‘fresh investigation’ against the two BJP leaders.

Members of BJP’s legal team alleged that despite the categorical restriction on any further investigation, the CID continued the probe desperately with a single motive – to implicate the two leaders on the direction of the Trinamul led government.

Mukul Roy’s Counsel Suman Roy termed CID’s ongoing investigation against him is ‘illegal’ and “being carried out with malafide intention”.

Krishnaganj MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead allegedly by an armed assailant on the evening of February 9 last year when he was watching a cultural programme on the occasion of Saraswati puja at a club ground near his home in the Phulbari area of Hanskhali in Nadia.

Five persons including senior BJP leader Mukul Roy and were named in the FIR lodged by Milan Saha, a close friend of Biswas and Trinamul activists. The CID took up the case and arrested five persons including the prime accused Abhijit Pundari, who allegedly had fired the MLA. BJP’s Ranaghat MP Jagannath’s name surfaced up during the investigation.

CID filed the charge sheet against three persons and dropped the two BJP leaders’ names since nothing was found against them. But it began ‘further investigation’ on the basis of the ‘revision application’, which the BJP leadership alleged as “illegal”.

Both Mukul Roy and Jagannath Sarkar had challenged ADJS’s decision allowing the ‘revision application’ which, is, however, still pending for hearing.

BJP’s Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar said, “The state government is conspiring to arrest us before the assembly poll. The motive of the revision petition was clear which eventually reflected on the charge sheet today. We will fight the battle at court”.

CID officials appeared in the court in Ranaghat on Monday refused to speak on the issue.
