Kalyani, Jan. 13: Nirmalya Ghosh, a professor in the department of physical science at IISER Kolkata who is also attached to its Center of Excellence in Space Sciences, has been named the 2021 recipient of the prestigious G.G Stokes Award in optical polarization by SPIE, the international society of optics and photonics. He is the first Indian to achieve this award
The G.G. Stokes award is being given since 2004 in recognition to exceptional contributions to the field optical polarization for specific achievement, development or invention of significant importance of optical science and society or for lifetime achievements. The award carries a cash honorarium of $2000.
Originally hails from Khirpai in Paschim Medinipur district, Nirmalya who now stays in Kalyani done his M Sc in Physics from Kalyani University. He had done his M Tech from IIT Kanpur and PhD from Raja Ramanna Centre for Advance Technology. He also worked as a scientist for 9 years with Centre’s Department of Atomic Energy.
Sources at IISER Kolkata said that that Ghosh is not just a successful researcher; rather he is a very popular among the students and supportive supervisor as well as acclaimed reviewer. After joining the IISER Kolkata he has developed and runs BiONaP, optics and photonics research laboratory with a particular focus on non-optics and bio photonics.
