Life Imprisonment For 11 For Land Grab Murder

Krishnanagar, July 15: An additional district and session judges’ court in Nadia’s Krishnanagar today sent 11 person to life imprisonment reviewing their death sentence delivered earlier for killing a 45 year old homemaker and injuring two other women as well as a minor boy by firing indiscriminately while trying to grab a piece of 8.28-acre agricultural land owned by government in Krishnaganj area during November 2014.

ADSJ (Court 3) Madhumita Roy today delivered the fresh verdict after reviewing an earlier death sentence pronounced by the same court on February 4 last year pursuing an instruction by Calcutta high court which directed the lower court to hear the case afresh.The convicted persons, also filed a petition before the Calcutta High court challenging the verdict. The verdict was also sent to Calcutta high court for confirmation for execution. 

On Friday the ADSJ (third court) Madhumita Roy found the 11 persons guilty again and handed over the life imprisonment to Lankeshwar Ghosh, 52 year old Trinamul activist and his close aides Palash Ghosh, Nepal Ghoh, Ashu Ghosh, Rajkumar Ghosh, Prabhash Ghosh, Joydeb Ghosh, Goutam Ghosh, Jhantu Ghosh, Shyamal Ghosh and Sanat Ghossh for killing Aparna Bag in Joyghata-Ghuguragachi village in Nadia’s Krihnaganj on November 23 of 2014 when she and other villagers tried to resist a group of 30 armed miscreants led by Trinamul activist Lankeshwar Ghosh (alias Lanka) from taking over the 8.28 acre plot that the residents have allegedly encroached upon and cultivating for the past two decades.

Miscreants fired at least 40 rounds to evacauate the land injuring fiver others.

Two other women Latika Tarafader and Shyamali Tarafder earned bullet injiruies on their faces while Rajib Mandal, a 14 year old boy was hit by a bullet on his leg fired by the miscreants.

The contentious land in Ghuguragachi village of Joyghata panchayat in Krishnaganj belonged originally recorded as government land where 55 families were farming over two decades.

The court has found them guilty under section 34 (common intention to cause injury), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (causing grievous injury) of IPC as well as under section 9 (b) of Explosive act and section 27 and 35 of Arms act.However, one of the gults, identified as Manabesh Ghosh remained absconding.

Deceased woman was an active supporter of CPM, who today welcomed the verdict.

Family members of the 11 persons refused to talk over the verdict. On the other hand, slain Aparna Bag’s husband Debananda have welcomed the verdict.
