Mohanpur, July 22: The prestigious Nature index annual table 2021 has rated the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research – Kolkata (IISER-Kolkata) as the 4th among the topmost academic institutions in the country. Last year the Bengal-based premier institute ranked 5th in the category.

At the same time, the Mohanpur based institution has also improved its position as it has been ranked 7th among all categories of institutions across the country for its high-quality scientific research works. In 2019-20 the institute was ranked 8th in the overall category.

The overall categories include the teaching and non-teaching institutes in the public and private sector as well as the NGOs involved in research and academic activities.

Bengaluru based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) ranked one in both categories. It also ranked 62nd in the Asia Pacific region. IISER K has also improved its ranking in the Asia Pacific region as it secured the 100th position, as one of the four Indian institutions which secured a place in the top100. Last year it was ranked 111 in the region.

At the same time as per the Nature index rating, IISER-K has retained its topmost position among all the IISERs, not only in overall performance but also in the subject-wise rankings.

This Nature index is considered the most competitive and prestigious metric observed closely across the globe to assess the performance of institutions and countries in scientific research. Ranking high in this index is considered a signature of high performance in research globally.

The new ranking has been announced based on Nature Index data from January 1 to December 31, 2020.

“This improved ranking reflects the consistent performance of researchers in the institute”, IISER K’s Director Professor Sourav Pal told The NfN. “It was a very difficult year due to the Covid 19 pandemic situation with research progress hampered continuously. Nevertheless, we continued our work and this ranking is a recognition of our collective efforts”, Professor Pal added.

Dean of International Relations and Outreach at IISER-Kolkata Professor Anindita Bhadra said, “This is a quite impressive ranking, which comes as recognition of the high-quality research works being done by our researchers”.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information collated from research articles published in an independently selected group of 82 high-quality science journals across disciplines. The database is compiled by the Nature Research team that provides a close to the real-time proxy of high-quality research output and collaboration at the institutional, national, and regional levels.

“The annual table highlights the institutions and countries which dominated high-quality research in the field of natural sciences during the year 2020 as tracked by Nature Index”, an official of IISER K said.
