Chapra, June 17: Police today arrested a fake MBBS doctor from Nadia’s Chapra, who has been practising for long settling in this bordering town as an expert in neuromedicine and in diabetes.

The arrest was made after the doctor failed to produce any testimonial in support of his doctoral degree as printed on his prescription.

The accused doctor identified as Adwaita Chandra Mondal, originally a resident of Burnpur in West Burdwan district, was produced before additional district session judges’ court in Krishnanagar and taken to police custody for 6days.

Two days ago Nadia police arrested another fake doctor, claiming to be an MBBS, from a medical camp in Hanshkhali. The accused doctor identified as Anil kumar Das, a resident of Chinsurah in Hooghly district, was arrested when he was prescribing ayurvedic medicines despite being an “MBBS” and collecting Rs.650 as his fee from patients.

Nadia superintendent of police Sheesh Ram Jhajhari said: “We arrested the doctor as failed to produce any satisfying proof in support of his doctoral degree. During the interrogation he confessed that he never studied MBBS”.

Police sources said the accused ‘doctor’ claimed to be a ‘registered medical practitioner’ (RMP). “But, he could not even submit the required document in support of this claim”, said an investigating officer. Local sources said Mondal settled in Chapra town around five years ago.

Since the crackdown started against fake doctors across the state, the Nadia police in last week directed the medicine retailers who run clinic to check the credibility of the doctors’ who have been practicing under their care. Responding to this, a medicine retailer appraised police about his suspicion on Adwaitya Chandra Mondal a few days ago.

A medicine retailer in Chapra, where the doctor once practiced said: “I became doubtful about his credibility since I found that the medicines he used to prescribe for neurological patients did not belong to neuromedicine category. I on several occasions asked him to give me proof about his qualifications be in all the times he deliberately avoided to submit it”.

On Friday afternoon, a team of Chapra police went to the doctor’s chamber and asked him to produce the proof of his doctoral degrees like MBBS and MD. “But, the doctor could not show us any proof”, an officer said.

The accused ‘doctor’ was charged for cheating and forgery
