“Padman”, Directed by R Balki which has Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapur as star attraction was released earlier this month (February 9). The film is based on the life of Tamil Nadu based social worker Arunachalam Muruganantham, who made a low cost sanitary napkin machine to spread the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural areas.

Brain behind today’s initiative Pushpen Chatterjee, BDO of Purbasthali (East) said: “The show was planned as part of our project titled “Manabi” in which we have been making the girls and young women aware about the menstrual hygiene and about the changes occur in their body after adolescence”.

“We also produce sanitary napkins engaging women of self help groups so that the girls in rural areas use it during their menstrual cycle. To make them more aware we today arranged the show of “Padman” for them, which has great message on the issue”.

As a gesture on its part, the SVF-cinema authorities made the show complimentary for the girls today.

For students like Aparna Majumdar, Parama Pal and many other students of class X, it was a different experience today.

Aparna who reads in Kuricha TD High School said: “Speaking about menstrual cycle is often appears to us as social taboo. But, this should be spoken clearly without hesitation and should be taken care of by using sanitary pad. This is very important for sake of health and hygiene”,
