Youth Beaten To Death By Girl’s Family Over Affair

Kaliganj, Feb. 15: A 21 year old youth from Nadia’s Kaliganj was beaten up to death allegedly by the family members of a girl with whom he was having an affair. The incident occurred on Monday evening. Subrata Halder, a resident of Matiary-Tiley Para, had succumbed to the injuries late on Wednesday night on the way to SSKM hospital in Kolkata while being transferred there from a nursing home in Burdwan.

The deceased was a worker at a bell metal utensils factory in the area.

Nadia police have started a murder case on the basis of a complaint lodged by victim’s father Naru Halder against five members of the girl’s family including her brothers and already arrested three of them, who on February 12 beaten up the youth with bamboo and iron rods when he along with two of his friends went to meet the girl in Faridpur village, where she lives and asking some locals about her whereabouts.

Arrested youths identified as Pintu Ghosh, Rabin Ghosh and Khokon Ghosh were produced before a court in Krishnanagar and taken to police custody for five days.

Sources said the incident occurred on Monday evening when Subrata and his two friends went to Faridpur and asking some locals if the knew the girl’s home or her phone numbers. Some locals informed the girl’s family members who rushed in and blocked their way. While 2 friends managed to escape, locals caught Subrata and started beating him.

Sources said Subrata was trying to find out a girls home, who was kept confined at home by her parents for having an affair with him.

Subrata, was found lying unconscious on a village road. He was taken to Katwa sub divisional hospital, crossing river Bhagirathi. On Tuesday he was taken Annapurna nursing home in Burdwan. But Doctors transferred him to SSKM medical college on Wednesday night.He succumbed on the way to Kolkata.

On Thursday the body was handed over the family members after postmortem at Burdwan medical college hospital. Accused Pintu’s wife Jyotsna said: “The three youths were teasing girls in our area in drunken state and asking for their mobile numbers. The local youths protested to it youths and beaten up them”.

Nadia Superintendent of police Sheesh Ram Jhajharia, however, said: “The motive behind the murder is not clear. We have arrested three youths who were allegedly involved behind the beating. All the possible aspects behind the murder are being looked into”
