Kalyani University Offers Fellowship For Research Works On Filmmaker Satyajit Ray

Kalyani, Feb. 20: Kalyani University authorities on Wednesday evening announced a fellowship dedicated after filmmaker Satyajit Ray. 

Vice-chancellor professor Sankar Kumar Ghosh while speaking at the concluding day of a symposium Satyajit Ray announced this.

 University authority claimed that this would be the first fellowship programme in memory of the legendary filmmaker by any university in the country. “This fellowship is a tribute to Satyajit Ray. It is a matter of pride for us to dedicate the fellowship in memory of Ray who became an integral character of Bengali culture and literature”, the vice-chancellor said.  

Announcing the fellowship, professor Ghosh said, “Students and researchers of Kalyani University will be eligible to apply for the fellowship. The details of eligibility and selection process will be announced shortly”.  

The university has decided to use funds provided by Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), launched in 2013. 

Sandip Ray, son of the legendary filmmaker has welcomed the ‘fellowship’ programme by the University. “It is a great gesture by the University. I am very happy about the announcement”, he said. “Many people have been doing research activities on life and works of my father. So this fellowship would come as a great support to them”, Sandip Roy stated. 

Satyajit Ray’s nephew Prasad Ranjan Ray has also welcomed the announcement of fellowship. “This is really something new for which I have been waiting for. A lot of research works being done on him at different institutions, but none of them has so far come up with such an idea. I am really very happy”.

While speaking at the symposium Barun Chanda, who performed in Ray’s landmark film Seemabaddha, welcomed the announcement. “This is the right decision, a much-awaited one”, Chanda said.

Professor Sukhen Biswas, head of Bengali department said, “A number of research works on Ray has already been done through the Bengali department. Now a fellowship would encourage more such researchers to work on Ray”.

Earlier Vice Chancellor professor Ghosh announced a year-long celebration of Ray’s birth centenary celebration. “We will organize seminars, symposium, quiz, film shows on Ray’s life and works throughout the year. The details of the schedule will be announced soon”.
