Limited OPD Service At AIIMS Kalyani From February 2020, IPD Likely By December

Kalyani, Dec. 9: The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Kalyani is expected to become operational with a limited outpatient service from February next year. At the same time it would commence the academic activities at own campus in Basantpur from August next year.

Decision about launching of the 960-bedded inpatient service will be taken by the Union Ministry of Health and the apex body of the AIIMS known as “Institute Body”. A union health Ministry official in New Delhi said that efforts are there to begin limited inpatient service in Kalyani by the end of 2020.

The IB of AIIMS is the apex decision making body of the AIIMS in the country. The IB is comprised of Governing body, Standing Finance Committee, Standing Academic Committee, Standing Selection Committee, Standing Estate Committee, Standing Hospital Affairs Committee.

AIIMS-Kalyani’s Deputy Director (Administration) Colonel Sree Krishna said, “The OPD is at present our top priority. We are trying best to launch the limited OPD service during February next year. The construction work of the five-storied OPD building is near the completion stage. We are hopeful to begin the service there soon”.

Sree Krishna, however, refused to speak anything about the launching of the inpatient service. He also could not provide any details of the “limited” OPD facilities which will likely be offered to the patients.

“Decision about the limited OPD facilities is yet to be finalized. It will be decided by the higher authorities”, Colonel Sree Krishna said.

“While launching the OPD, our effort at the same time is to start academic activities simultaneously. At present, the first batch of MBBS students has been attending classes at the Kalyani College of Medicine campus temporarily since September 4 this year. But we are trying to accommodate the next academic batch of 100 MBBS students at our own campus,” He added.

“The first batch of 50 students have been staying in new hostel in Basantapur premise, but using the academic infrastructure of Kalyani College of Medicine. But, we are trying best to make our academic infrastructure ready in complete shape by August next year so that new students could study at own campus and to shift the academic activities from Kalyani College of Medicine campus”, the deputy director further added. 

At present the first batch of students only being taught the Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry and Community & Health Medicine. At present, 19 faculty members have joined and some more to join soon, an AIIMS offcial in Kalyani said.

Meanwhile, officials of union ministry of health, AIIMS governing body is at present working in coordination with the Bengal government so that infrastructure outside the premises becomes fully ready.

outside our premise. This includes road accessibility and other amenities”.

The construction work for AIIMS Kalyani had begun in 2016 on 179.82 acres land allotted by the Bengal Government in the Basantapur area located on the outskirt of Kalyani town. The site is about 45 km away from Calcutta and well connected with NH12. The link road that connects AIIMS with NH12 has already widened with a four-lane track.

The construction work of AIIMS being executed by a number of private agencies under the supervision of the center’s Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation Limited.

Whereas the construction works are going on in full swing, the apex authority of AIIMS Kalyani known as ‘Institute Body’ would examine the feasibility  to launch the inpatient service by the end of the next year.

A senior official of Ministry of Health in New Delhi said on Saturday that efforts are being made to accelerate the pace of works for the remaining parts so that the in-patient department (IPD) services with limited facilities could begin preferably by the end of next year (2020).
