‘Nature First’ Begins Week Long Tree Planting Programme

Ranaghat, July 1: Nature first, a nature lovers’ organization, today organized a tree-planting programme at the Rabindranath Tagore Sesquicentennial auditorium compound in Ranaghat town. The programme was organized to mark the week-long “Van Mahotsav” programme that commenced today.

The “Van Mahotsav” is an annual tree planting programme that held across the country during July. The initiative was started in 1950 by environmentalist and former union minister of food and agriculture Sri Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi aiming to create awareness and enthusiasm among people about forest conservation and planting of trees

This tree planting programme has now become a week long affair and observed almost in every state on different dates during the first week of July that in other term marks the beginning of monsoon.

Inaugurating the initiative of the ‘Nature First’ today, Nadia zilla sabhadhipati Bani Kumar Roy planted some saplings of “Champa” tree in the auditorium compound. Ranaghat sub divisional information and culture officer Sanjay Chakraborty was also present at the programme and planted some saplings of “Chhatim” tree, which was one of the favourite flower plants of Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Zilla Sabhadhipati Bani Kumar Roy said: “This is a great initiative by the Nature First. It is high time we should become careful to protect the nature for sake of our lives. The more we would be planting trees, the more we would be living better”.

Secretary of Nature First, Munmun Kirtania, a physician by profession, said: “During the week long event, we have taken up a series of plantation programme and the first of which held today. Today we planted 40 saplings of different flower plants inside the Rabindranath Tagore Sesquicentennial auditorium compound. On July 5, we will plant more such saplings in Ward-14 of Ranaghat Municipality. Our objective is not just planting saplings of trees, rather to create awareness among the people about the need of green and to protect it”.
