Mohanpur (Nadia), June 20: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research-Kolkata (IISER-K) has embarked on a plan to explore disease management through interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with other organizations. Amid the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, IISER-K aims to address critical issues by fostering inter-disciplinary and collaborative research.
Newly appointed Director of IISER-K, Sunil Kumar Khare, a professor in Biochemistry, shared this vision during the institute’s 11th convocation held at its campus in Nadia’s Mohanpur. IISER-Kolkata is ranked 43rd in the country according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
Khare, a respected figure in the global research community, serves as the President of the Association of Microbiologists of India and the vice president of the Biotech Research Society. He highlighted the institute’s active collaborations with national and global institutions. Currently, IISER-K researchers are involved in 20 national and 9 international projects through specific memorandums of understanding.
IISER-K has also partnered with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences-Kalyani (AIIMS) and West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences for collaborative research. “Projects include studying serum trace elements levels and post-partum depression in pregnant women, as well as genetic variants of human hemoglobin”, he said.
Additionally, IISER-K is engaged in a collaborative research program on Artificial Intelligence in law management with the West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences. The institute’s research excellence has garnered support from national and international funding agencies, including Tata Steel and Bharat Biotech International Limited. At the 11th convocation, 283 students received degrees, including a posthumous BSMS degree awarded to Saptarshi Roy.
