Kalyani, March 28: Satya Gupta, President of VLSI Society of India urged the students to become “mentor” to the juniors to see themselves in “Bigger Role” in Nation’s growth and development.
Gupta known for his instrumental role in shaping the India Semiconductor Mission, told this while speaking at the 4th annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Kalyani (IIIT-Kalyani) at the APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium on Friday.
The highly decorated bright auditorium illuminated the faces of 103 graduates from the 2020-2024 batch, a culmination of four years of rigorous academic pursuit. The air was thick with the scent of freshly pressed graduation gowns and the quiet hum of proud parents. Leading the ceremony was Santanu Chattopadhyay, Director of IIIT-K, who warmly congratulated the graduating class, who gathered to receive their much coveted degrees and awards.
The highlight of the event was the address by the chief guest, Satya Gupta, President of the Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Society of India. A global techno-visionary with over 40 years of experience in the semiconductor and electronics industry, Gupta’s presence commanded respect and attention. His dedication to fostering research and talent in semiconductor and chip design, evident through his leadership of the VLSI Society, has been instrumental in shaping the India Semiconductor Mission.
This mission, aimed at positioning India as a global leader in chip design and manufacturing, owes much of its momentum to the groundwork laid by Gupta and his peers since the early 2000s.

He also expressed his fervent hope for the entrepreneurial spirit within the graduating class. “I am hopeful that at least one in five of you, after gaining industry experience, will go on to become entrepreneurs—driving India’s technological advancements and creating jobs,” he stated, his voice filled with optimism.
He further added, “India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, supported by government initiatives like the Startup India program, provides fertile ground for innovation. I urge you to leverage this support, explore emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, and sustainable energy solutions to build ventures that not only generate profit but also contribute to a greener and more equitable future.”
Earlier IIIT-Kalyani Director Santanu Chattopadhyay took the opportunity to highlight the institute’s progressive initiatives, particularly their efforts to bridge the gender gap in technology. “We have strategically introduced supernumerary seats beyond our sanctioned intake to encourage more female students to pursue B.Tech programs,” he declared, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to inclusivity. He further announced that an impressive 89.33% of the graduating batch had already secured placements, a testament to the high caliber of education imparted at IIIT-K.
