Father-Son Arrested In Nadia For Killing 12 Dogs With Poison

Accused father and son - Hazrat Biswas and Miyajan Biswas

Krishnanagar, Feb. 1: Police have arrested an elderly person and his young son from Nadia’s Chapra allegedly for killing 12 dogs feeding them food spiked with poisonous substances. The deceased dogs include 11 puppies aged only 10 days and their mother.

The Chapra police acting on a complaint lodged by one Suchitra Biswas, a homemaker, arrested Hazrat Biswas, 61, and his son Miyajan Biswas, 39, from their home Bagmara area of the town on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident angered the local residents, who gheraoed the house of the accused persons and tried to drag the accused out. But a police team arrived at the spot and controlled the situation.

Police recovered the bodies of the deceased dogs and sent them for an autopsy to Krishnagar based veterinary hospital. Police have begun a case against the father-son duo and charged them under several sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and for mischief by killing animals.

They were produced before a court in Krishnagar which ordered 14 days of judicial custody.

Police and the local sources said trouble broke out a few days ago when a street dog had bitted accused Miyajan’s daughter. Miyajan could not trap the dog but began randomly beating the other dogs in the area.

A police official in Chapra said, “Miyajan’s family member had suspected that one of the dogs being reared by their neighbor Subrata Biswas had actually bitten the girl. Eventually, it appeared that they conspired to eliminate all the puppies and their mother”.

The family also threatened Subrata and his family with dire consequences for the dogs asking them to control the animals. “They came to our home and threatened us to kill the dogs feeding them with poison. But we never imagined that they would really kill innocent puppies in such a way”, said Subrata Biswas.

“We were shocked to find the puppies lying dead scattered in the area outside our residence. Some dogs were found in critically ailing condition, who also died. Total 11 puppies and their mother were found lying dead. Later my wife Suchitra Biswas lodged a complaint against Hazrat and his son at Chapra police station”, Biswas added further.
