Kaligaj, Feb. 2: Trinamool Congress MLA from Kaliganj, Nadia, Nasiruddin Ahmed, has died at the age of 71. He suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on Saturday night and was pronounced dead at Mira Primary Health Center in Plassey. His death has been met with sadness across the political spectrum, particularly within the Trinamool Congress.
Known affectionately as ‘Lal’ in political circles, Nasiruddin was the chairman of the Trinamool Congress’ Krishnanagar organizational district and a lawyer by profession.1 He is survived by his son and two daughters.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences on X, calling him a “trustworthy asset,” a “veteran public worker and political representative,” and praising his work as a lawyer and social worker.3 Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari also shared his condolences on X, expressing his sadness at Nasiruddin’s untimely death.
Nasiruddin’s political career began in 2011 when he won the Kaliganj seat for the Trinamool Congress.4 He lost the seat in 2016 to a Congress-CPM alliance candidate, Sheikh Hasanuzzaman, but regained it in 2021 after Hasanuzzaman joined the Trinamool Congress.
His passing leaves a significant void in the Kaliganj Trinamool leadership. Nakashipara MLA Kallol Khan expressed his shock, noting that he had spoken with Nasiruddin just hours before his death.
Nasiruddin’s death creates a vacancy in the Kaliganj assembly seat, requiring a by-election. With state assembly elections planned for next year, the new MLA will likely serve a short six-month term.
