SFI Team Meets Demised IISER-K Student Sagar’s Parents

Haringhata, May 4: The Students Federation of India (SFI) would extend all cooperation if the parents of Sagar Mondal want to continue fight for justice for death of their son Sagar Mondal. The SFI team led by MP Ritabrata Banerjee, Madhuja Senroy, Debajyoti Das, who today met the bereaved parents of the second year BSc student of Indian Institute of Science Education and Reasearch Kolkata, at their Haringhata Fatehpur home has also assured them to extend all legal support if they want to lodge any complant for abetment to commit suicide against any of his classmates.

Ritabrata Banerjee said: “Death of Sagar Mondal is a great loss for the country. His death was very unfortunate. It appears that the boy committed suicide. But, if Sagar’s parents think that he was compelled to commit suicide and there was enough abatement behind the suicide, we would extend full support to him to get justice for him”.

“We met the bereaved family and told them that we will be with them in their fight for justice”, Ritabrata added.

The SFI team leadership today talked to Sagar’s parents Susanta and Santana Mondal as well as his sister Rekha and a number of local villagers to whom the promising boy was a pride.

Meanwhile, IISER-Kolkata authorities today in a official written statement categorically made it clear that untimely death of Sagar Mandal is not a case of ‘caste based discrimination’ as reported in a section of the media.

The statement issued by IISER-Kolkata registrar Joydip Sil stated: “We reiterate that this biased allegations are totally baseless. We earnestly appeal to all to refrain from such acts in the greater interest and welfare of the students community and IISER Kolkata.We emphaise that the institute has always upheld the highest level of integrity and tolerance towards maintaining a harmonious campus culture at IISER Kolkata”.
