A squall coupled with thunder shower, with peak speed reaching about 90 kmph, roared through Nadia district for about 30 minutes on Monday evening, leaving a trail of devastation while, severely disrupting normal life from Kalyani to Kaliganj. Hundreds of trees were uprooted while several mobile phone towers and houses collapsed under the impact of strong winds which also disrupted train service in Sealdah Krishnanagar stretch. Electric power and water supply were badly affected in many areas. Heavy rain led to waterlogging and inundation of roads in Chakdah, Kalyani and several other pockets of the district, causing massive inconvenience to commuters. Disaster management teams and civic authorities started restoration work soon after the storm subsided.
