Couple Jumped Before Running Train, Died

Chakdah, Oct. 22: A class 10 girl in Nadia’s Shimurali had died on Saturday night as she jumped in front of a running train after a quarrel with her fiancé. The youth was also died as he was run over by the speeding train while trying to save the girl’s life.

The exact reason behind their contention could not be ascertained, but some of the girl’s friends claimed that the youth was insisting the girl to get married soon, while she was against eager to pass the Madhyamik Examination first slated for February next year.

Police have started a case of unnatural death with no apparent evidence of foul play was found.

The incident occurred at about 7.30pm on Saturday night near a railway level crossing at Ruppur village.

The deceased girl, who was a daughter of fish trader identified as Kalyani Halder (19). She was a student of Shimurali Upendra Vidyapith and scheduled to appear in next year’s Madhyamik Examination. The girl was a resident of Madhya Chanduria village.

On the other hand, her fiancé Pranab Sarkar (26), a resident of Bablatala area, was working as a carpenter with a Kerala based construction firm and came on leave on the occasion of Deepavali.

Local villagers on Ruppur claimed that they witnessed the girl and youth quarreling for long standing close the level crossing and ended up suddenly with the girl jumped in front of a Sealdah bound train and the boy followed him.

Girl’s father Kartick Halder said: “We had no knowledge about my daughter’s affair with Pranab. He never visited our home. So it is not clear to us why they committed suicide”. But, a friend of Kalyan said that she was disturbed as Pranab was insisting her to get married so despite her wish to complete her Madhyamik Examination first in February next year.
