Covid Positive Patient Died Unattended; Doctor Accused Of Negligence

SNR Carnival Hospital in Kalyani

Kalyani, Aug. 10: The Nadia district administration has ordered a probe into an alleged incident of negligence and the apathy on the part of a doctor to treat a gasping patient at a dedicated Covid hospital in Nadia’s Kalyani, who eventually died on Saturday night. Some patients and staff of the hospital repeatedly appealed to the lady doctor to see the patient, but their call failed to evoke any response from her.

The incident came to light causing much embarrassment to the district administration when a staff of the Kalyani based SNR Carnival hospital, a designated Covid care hospital under state control, made a video viral in which the panicked patients were seen how their calls to treat the patient was ignored by the doctor.

Sritama Deb, a staff of the hospital who shoot the video and seen in the viral clip later lodged a complaint before the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Nadia, who ordered an internal probe into the allegation.

Sources said, the family members of the deceased patient, who, however, could not be identified also lodged a complaint with the nodal officer in charge of the hospital.

Acknowledging the incident as ‘unfortunate one’, Sub Divisional Officer of Kalyani Dhiman Barai said, “The allegation is being examined. Senior officials of the district health administration making the necessary inquiries to find out what exactly happened. It would be too early to comment on the incident”

Sources said that a Covid positive patient with serious respiratory troubles was admitted to the SNR Carnival hospital on Saturday evening. He was put to the ward. But since brought to the ward in critical condition neither any doctor nor any nurse bothered to attend him while he went on gasping and eventually died.

In the viral video, a lady patient admitted to the hospital seen said, “Since admission, no doctor came to visit the patient who was suffering from respiratory troubles. Later we found him lying dead. But even after a few hours since his death, no doctor visited him. There is no doctor or nursing staff inside the ward to take care of the patients. All the patients are panicked witnessing such negligence at the hospital”.

Sritama Deb, who lodged the complaint was also seen in the said video. She said, “I went to inform the doctors when some patients sought my help to save the patient. But the on-duty doctor abused me verbally and pushed me out of his room. Three nursing staff present there refused to listen to me and did not bother to visit the gasping patient”.

A senior official involved in the probe refused to identify the doctor. “It is an internal matter. We will do whatever is required so that justice is done. But, nothing can be said at this stage without an investigation”, he added.
