Krishnanagar, Aug. 17: Three friends were crushed to death on NH12 as the Maruti Wagonr in which they were traveling rammed into a stationary lorry near in Bahadurpur forest area of Dhubulia in Nadia district during the late hours of Wednesday night.
The driver of the car, a friend of the victims from Kharagpur, suffered critical injuries and now fighting for life at Nadia district hospital in Krishnangar.
Police said, the three deceased persons – Sougata Kanu, Nayan Sarkar, and Debasish Biswas all aged in their late 20s, and residents of Shimultala areas in Krishnanagar, were returning from Berhampore. Deceased Nayan was a civic police by profession and attached to the Krishnanagar police district. The identity of the injured driver could not be ascertained till late Thursday evening.
Police said, the accident occurred during the intervening hours of Thursday near a turn on the NH12 as the driver of the car, lost control and rammed into the back of the lorry, which suffered a technical snag and had to be parked at the roadside.
Police and local sources said that the ill-fated car was running at a very high speed on the rain-soaked road that lost control at the turn before hitting the stationary lorry on its back.
Some local residents informed the police, who took the passengers of the car to the Nadia district hospital in Krishnanagar, where doctors declared three of them dead.
Jit Biswas, a relative of the deceased Debasish, owner of the car and a consultant by profession said, “Debasish always personally drove his car. He was a very careful driver. But it is not clear to me why he left driving to his friend since the road condition is quite unknown to him and it is not well enough due to the ongoing widening work of the NH12″.
