Kalyani, Nov. 8: A woman, who was detected having ovarian cancer with a giant tumor during her pregnancy, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the Jawaharlal Nehru hospital and College of Medicine in Kalyani amidst a great pleasure among the doctors and nurses.
Anuradha Sarkar (29), a resident of Nadia’s Kaliganj broke down in joy when a team of doctors of the hospital’s gynecology department led by assistant professor Sougata Kumar Burman handed over the 2.5kg newborn baby girl to her on Tuesday evening.
The girl was born through a c-section, but the before that the doctors removed the malignant tumor, weighing about 3kg.
After delivery of the baby the doctors removed Anuradha’s ovary and uterus so that malignancy does not spread further.
“She wanted to keep the baby continuing with pregnancy. It was a tough task to keep the baby alive fighting with cancer and tumor, but eventually we have succeeded”, said gynecologist Sougata Kumar Burman.
During the last five months Anuradha was admitted to the JNM Hospital at different periods for examinations under care of Dr. Burman.
“It was long treatment and we finally removed the tumor keeping the baby alive. We also removed both ovary and uterus after the delivery. We are hopeful that malignancy would not spread”, Dr. Burman added.
“We are hopeful about it because the carcinoembryonic (CEA) tissues and CA-125 antigen, a type of protein found on the surface of ovarian cancer cell did not rise during pregnancy. The microscopic findings during the C–section also suggests so. Moreover, there was no rupture, which made us very hopeful. We are, however, waiting for biopsy report”, said Kumar Burman.
Oncologist Subir Ganguly, however, feels it would too early to comment anything about the future. “I think it would be too early to conclude to any such possibility about spreading of malignancy in future at least until the biopsy is done”, he said.
Wife of an oil mill employee Anuradha, a mother of 12 year girl, came to the hospital with unusually ‘blotted’ abdomen nine months ago during her early stage of her pregnancy.
“We are hopeful that malignancy would not spread further because the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) tissues and CA-125 antigen, a type of protein found on the surface of ovarian cancer cell did not rise during pregnancy. The microscopic findings during the C–section also suggests so. This made us very hopeful” – Dr. SOUGATA KR BURMAN
Her husband Nabakumar Sarkar said: “The doctors at JNM hospital detected it as a big cancerous ovarian tumor. But, Anuradha was determined to keep the baby. The doctors ultimately rescued us”.
Dr. Burman said: “It was very difficult task. Such a big tumor in ovary is quite unusual. Anuradha had tremendous confidence. We finally took suggestion from the doctors of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute who advised us to continue with pregnancy as it was too late to terminate the fetus”.
A euphoric Superintendent of JNM Hospital Subikash Biswas said: “It is a great job done by our doctors. I am very happy because the entire treatment was done under one roof at the hospital and that too absolutely free of cost. I am hopeful that such sincere initiative from the doctors would inspire others doctors at the government hospitals too”
