Union health minister J.P.Nadda visiting a health care facility at AIIMS Kalyani on Friday

Kalyani, Jan. 9: Union Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday inaugurated a range of advanced healthcare facilities at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani, with the launch of key oncology infrastructure marking the highlight of the visit. The inauguration of state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology facilities is expected to significantly strengthen cancer care services in West Bengal by enabling timely diagnosis and treatment through modern radiation therapy equipment.

Alongside the oncology facilities, the Union Minister also inaugurated the departments of Trauma and Emergency Medicine, aimed at providing comprehensive and round-the-clock care to critically injured and emergency patients, and a modern Pneumatic Tube System. The pneumatic system, a vital logistical upgrade within the hospital, is designed to rapidly transport samples, medicines and documents across departments, thereby improving operational efficiency and reducing turnaround time in patient care. Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar and Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar were present during the programme.

During his visit, Nadda held an administrative review meeting with senior officials and faculty members of AIIMS Kalyani to assess the institution’s progress since its inception. He also undertook a detailed inspection of the Out Patient Department and In Patient Department, closely observing the delivery of healthcare services and interacting with patients to gain first-hand feedback on treatment and facilities.

The Union Minister spent considerable time engaging with students, doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, reviewing academic, clinical and training practices at the institute. He interacted with faculty members to understand their professional requirements and took note of various issues raised, underlining the importance of strengthening both medical education and clinical services in parallel.

Officials said the visit underscored the Central Government’s sustained commitment to expanding public healthcare infrastructure in West Bengal and ensuring that advanced, affordable and patient-centric medical services are available to the people. The comprehensive interactions with patients, students and healthcare professionals reflected a holistic review of service delivery, medical education and institutional functioning at AIIMS Kalyani.

The inauguration of oncology, emergency and support systems at the institute is expected to substantially enhance tertiary healthcare services in the region. The visit reaffirmed the government’s focus on strengthening emergency response, expanding cancer care and supporting high-quality medical education, positioning AIIMS Kalyani as a key hub for advanced healthcare and training in eastern India.
