Majhdia, June 26: Six BJP activists including the younger brother of the party’s Ranaghat South MLA Mukutmani Adhikari were injured during a clash with Trinamul Congress supporters in Nadia’s Krishnaganj on Sunday night.
BJP leadership alleged that the miscreants with the support of local Trinamul supporters were hurling bombs to terrorize local people in the Naghata area of Krishnaganj when the saffron party activists tried to resist them apparently leading the clash.
Anupam Adhikari, a hardware shop owner and younger brother of MLA Mukutmani Adhikari, suffered head injuries and was admitted to the Nadia district hospital in Krishnanagar along with one Trinamul Congress supporter.
The incident ignited political tension in the area as the BJP supporters on Monday morning staged a demonstration near Bhajanghat crossing blocking the Krishnanagar-Hanshkhali road and demanding the arrest of the culprits. Trinamul supporters also staged a demonstration in front of the Krishnaganj police station demanding the arrest of BJP MLA’s brother Anupam Adhikari.
However, police have begun a probe on the basis of two separate complaints lodged by the erring rivals and so far arrested three persons that include two suspected Trinamul supporters for their alleged involvement in the incident.
Police and local sources said that the trouble began at about 11 pm when miscreants in proximity to Trinamul allegedly began hurling bombs in the Naghata area, particularly targeting the houses of the local BJP supporters.
Speaking to the reporters BJP MLA Mukutmani said, “It was a planned attack by the ruling party apprehending defeat in the area. If free and fair polls were held, BJP candidates would win in most of the seats, which the ruling party has realized well and so began terrorizing people”.
Refuting the allegations Trinamul’s Krishnaganj block committee president Laxman Ghosh Choudhury said, “It was BJP supporters led by MLA’s brother hurled bomb targeting some of our activists when they were taking rest sitting on a field after the end of day’s campaigning for the panchayat poll. Our supporters tried to resist them when a clash broke out…But, it was actually the MLA’s family who conspired the attack”.
