Nabadwip, April 5: In an attempt to conserve and restore the population of Gangetic fish, the Barrackpore-based Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) began a fish ranching programme in the Bhagirathi River on Wednesday. To begin with at least 2.5 lakhs of wild Indian major carp germplasm like Rohu, Katla, and Mrigal were ranched in the main channel of the river in Nadia’s Nabadwip. River ranching is an aquaculture activity in which fish species are held captive to grow up and then released and harvested as adults. The initiative of CIFRI has been undertaken as a special activity under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana which aimed to augment and enhance fish production and productivity through expansion, intensification, diversification, and productive utilization of land and water.
