Lorry Brushed Bus; Woman Lost Arm

Mukto Acharya, 46, at hospital

Karimpur, Sept. 26: Mukto Acharya, 46, a homemaker from Krishnagar’s Radhanagar area lost her right arm as she carelessly put it outside through a window while traveling on a bus that was brushed by a speeding lorry running from the opposite direction.

The bizarre incident occurred at about 8 am on Karimpur bound bus from Krishnagar at Kanthalia village on the Krishnanagar-Domkol state highway when the woman was going to her paternal house to attend the family ritual on the occasion of the ensuing Durga puja.

Eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred when the woman was trying to bring out her mobile phone to receive a call. “She was carelessly trying to open her bag when her arm went outside through the window and it got entangled with sacks of a fast passing good carrying lorry that eventuality snapped her arm”.

The victim was rushed to Karimpur rural hospital. But she was soon transferred to Nadia district hospital in Krishnagar, where she was admitted to the critical care unit in an unconscious state. Police retrieved her snapped arm and sent it to the hospital. But doctors at the district hospital ruled out the possibility of restoration of the arm.

Mihir Majumdar, the brother of the woman said, “We urged the doctors to make a try but they ruled out. It would now be very difficult for her to live with one arm and to help her husband to make a little financial contribution to the family”.

Family sources claimed that since her husband, a small businessman, has been suffering from multiple illnesses, she has begun selling sari door to door for a living.

Meanwhile, police seized the bus on which the woman was traveling. But the driver has managed to escape. Police also tried to nab the goods carrier that was running at high speed.
