Calcutta: Senior BJP leader and party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad has accused Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of playing with the people of Bengal with “ugly” politics forgetting her past that once established her as a “fighter” against atrocities. A little after arriving in Calcutta on Wednesday along with four other party MPs, who are part of the BJP’s fact-finding team, the former union law minister has also made a scathing attack accusing her of “conspicuous silence” over the killing of 48 persons.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, who leads the BJP’s parliamentary fact-finding team, said, “What has happened to her…! I would like to remind Mamataji about her evolution. She was a fighter. After 34 years of Left Front misrule and arrogance…she is going beyond them. But, now her politics has become uglier than the politics of the Left. Her politics have become full of atrocities”.

Headed by Prasad, BJP’s fact-finding team comprised of party MPs Satya Pal Singh, Rekha Verma, Dr. Rajdeep Roy, and Brij Lal arrived in Calcutta and visited the violence-torn areas under the Basirhat subdivision in North 24 Parganas later on the day. The team will also visit North Bengal during the three days tour in the state.

Speaking about the large-scale violence that unleashed a reign of terror in the state, Prasad at a media conference that was held in Calcutta said, “The ongoing violence and atrocities in Bengal reminded me of violence in Bihar and UP. Such violence once used to occur in those states. But that is a closed chapter there”

“People in Bengal being beaten up inside the counting station. Even after winning the poll, candidates are being denied certificates and threatened to join Trinamul Congress. Your acts have ashamed the democracy”, he added.

Accusing the Bengal Chief Minister of maintaining silence even after the death of persons, Prasad said, “It is a shame that you have so far no reaction even after the 48 deaths. This is a sign of shameful democracy.”

The BJP leader also blamed the opposition parties which met in Patna to form an alliance against Narendra Modi. Raising questions about no reaction by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri over the violence in Bengal, Prasad said, “I am amazed to see their conspicuous silence. It is a shame that they have no reaction even after 48 deaths. Their silence shows their opportunism. Their conspicuous silence proved that they are opportunists and doing politics for the sake of power”

Earlier after arriving at the Calcutta airport, he told the reporters that “violence” and “killings” are unacceptable. “It is very sad that so many persons have been killed…we will try to find out the truth and submit a report to the Party president J.P.Nadda”, he told the reporters.

Violence rocked Bengal during the panchayat polls. So far 48 persons have been killed prior to and after the poll.

Trinamul spokesperson Kunal Ghsoh, however, termed the arrival of the BJP’s fact-finding team as a ploy to “divert attention” from the party’s humiliating defeat in the gram panchayat polls.

“The BJP leadership should first send a fact-finding team to Manipur which is on fire for the last two months”, Kunal Ghosh said.
