Haringhata, May 22: Rakesh Parui, 32, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Ward-2 of Haringhata Municipality in Nadia district, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a party office near Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) on Thursday evening.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, his body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan at the party in Mohanpur area near the BCKV campus. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Parui, a former prominent leader of the party’s student wing TMCP, may have died by suicide. Haringhata police have launched an inquiry into the incident.
Party insiders claimed that Parui had recently stirred controversy by allegedly instigating student unrest on the BCKV campus—an act that reportedly did not sit well with the party leadership. They also hinted at his possible involvement in corruption-related matters.
Reacting to the incident, Haringhata Municipality chairman Rajib Dalal expressed shock and said he was unaware of any issues that might have led to the alleged suicide. “I am devastated. He was a loyal party worker and like a brother to me,” Dalal said.
