New Delhi, Dec. 8: Trinamul Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who represents Nadia’s Krishnanagar parliamentary constituency, has been expelled by the Lok Sabha on Friday through a voice vote over the ‘cash for query’ allegation as per the recommendations of the Ethics Committee report.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi proposed to expel 49 years old dynamic MP, after the speaker did not allow her to speak any further in self defence. The Ethics Committee found Moitra guilty of sharing her personal credential being an MP with others accepting gifts for personal interest from a businessman.
After Joshi made the move, speaker Om Birla tabled the proposal for voice voting.
Coming out from the Parliament after her expulsion, a dejected Mahua Moitra raised her voice accusing the BJP led government of corruption and asserted that she would return to the floor very soon. She also indicated to take the matter for a legal battle until justice is delivered.
Meanwhile, Bengal chief minister and Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee termed the expulsion of Mahua Moitra as “Betrayal of Constitutional right”. Extending support to Moitra, she expressed her shock over the way her party MP was not allowed to defend herself. Speaking to the media persons in Darjeeling on Friday afternoon, she said, “I am shocked…I am sad to see the attitude of the BJP. A report with 475 pages submitted and after which only half an hour was given to read it…our party fully support Mahua Moitra. It is a betrayal of constitutional rights”.
“Mahua is a victim of circumstances and the party is fully behind Mahua. I am very much shocked. It is a sad day for the Parliament. It is very much unacceptable and Mahua will definitely win this battle”, Mamata said.
Mahau was accused of taking favour for putting questions as per the direction of businessman Darshan Hiranandani. Hiranandani, who allegedly paid her to raise questions in Lok Sabha against the Adani Group, in a signed affidavit had claimed that the Trinamul MP targeted industrialist Gautam Adani to “malign and embarrass” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
