Kalyani, Oct. 29: Patients with cardiac and lung-related issues can now access advanced care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kalyani, following the inauguration of a cardiac catheterization lab and cardiopulmonary bypass machine on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two state-of-the-art facilities virtually from New Delhi. In Kalyani, the event was attended by senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, AIIMS Kalyani Executive Director Dr. Ramji Singh, and BJP MPs Shantanu Thakur, Jagannath Sarkar, and Shamik Bhattacharya.

Dr. Ramji Singh highlighted the new cardiac catheterization lab’s capabilities, noting its significance for treating patients with heart attacks, coronary artery disease, chest pain, congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary embolisms. “This lab will enable visualization of the heart’s chambers and arteries, facilitating procedures such as angiograms, angioplasty, ablation, and pacemaker or ICD implantation,” he added.

The cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine, or heart-lung machine, is designed to temporarily take over heart and lung functions during surgery, ensuring proper blood circulation and oxygenation while the heart is paused. A doctor at AIIMS Kalyani explained that it’s essential for open-heart surgeries, where it supports procedures to repair heart muscles, valves, or other structures.

AIIMS Kalyani began offering limited OPD services in January 2021 and currently operates 26 OPD clinics, serving approximately 2,700 patients daily. Since launching its IPD services on December 16, 2021, the institute now has 430 out of its total 960 beds in operation.
