Chakdah, June 15: A sub inspector attached to Chakdah police station and a primary school teacher also from the town were arrested by a team of Anti-Corruption Branch while accepting money from manager of an agricultural cooperative bank in Nadia’s Chakdah on Friday evening.

Sub inspector Anup Pal and school teacher Subhasish De alias Benu, who is also brother local Tatala-I gram panchayat’s pradhan, were caught red-handed by the ACB team from latter’s house in Chakdah while accepting a cash amount of Rupees two lakhs from Manager of the bank Biswajit Ghosh, who was allegedly threatened by the SI to implicate him in a robbery case of his bank unless paid the money.

The sleuths laid a trap and caught the two accused red-handed while receiving money from Ghosh, who lodged a complaint with ACB seeking its help.

The duo was later taken to Kolkata for interrogation and produced before additional district and session judge-2 court at the Banks Hall court complex in Calcutta which ordered five days police custody for them.

A senior officer of the Anti Corruption Branch in Calcutta said, “The duo was charged for different sections under Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and under section 120B of IPC”.

Sources in ACB said that a trap was laid for the accused sub inspector and his aide primary school teacher Subhasish De on the basis of a complaint lodged on Thursday by Biswajit Ghosh, manager Kamalpur Suntra Cooperative Agricultural Development bank in Chakdah town.

Police said, on August 12 evening last year, four masked gunmen entered Kamalpur Suntra Cooperative Agricultural Development Bank and robbed about Rupees 23 lakhs tying two employees of the bank with rope. Police later arrested two persons in connection with the robbery who are now under jail custody. Accused sub inspector Pal was the investigating officer of the case.

But, during investigation early this month SI Pal had allegedly started blackmailing Manager Biswajit Ghosh claiming that one of the arrested persons in the robbery case has named him as one of the conspirators in the robber. Pal sought money from Ghosh as protection fee else he would implicate him. Ghosh finding no way lodged complaint with ACB which laid the trap and arrested the duo on Friday evening.
