Krishnanagar, May 28: Nadia recorded the highest single-day spike on Thursday with 15 persons were tested Covid positive raising the total number of confirmed patients to 53.

Simultaneously on the day the state also recorded the highest single-day net spike with 344 patients were identified with Covid positive making the total 4536. As per the state health department’s bulleting 2573 are active patients at present admitted to different Covid hospitals across the state.

Out of the 15 new Covid positive cases in Nadia, Ranaghat-II block lead the chart with 10 patients, followed by Tehatta-1 block with 4 patients and Santipur with 1 patient.

Sources in the district administration said all the new Covid patients returned home recently from Maharashtra and some other states. In most of the cases, such migrant workers were advised home quarantine. However, the spike in positive cases indicates that they did not obey the precautionary advice.

Expressing serious concern over the rapid spike, an officer of the district Covid management cell said, “With a large number of migrant workers returning home in the district and not obeying the precautionary guidelines, the Covid situation in the district is gradually going out of control. Unless these persons and their family members realize the fatality of the disease, a major outbreak of the disease is obviously waiting for us in the coming weeks”.

On Thursday Trinamul MP from Krishnagar Mahua Moitra in a video message has appealed to the migrant workers strictly to adhere to the quarantine norms. She has advised the people returning home from outside to stay at institutional quarantine. “People who are returning home and their family members should try to understand its importance and should not provoke others against it. This is mandatorily needed for the safety of all.  They should not roam freely and mingle up with people in the locality, rather strictly stay at the local schools made as quarantine centres for two weeks as per the guidelines of the health workers and should undergo fever screening every day”.

Meanwhile, with most of the new Covid positive cases being detected from the migrant workers, people in many areas being afraid of a possible outbreak, have attacked them. Local residents in Nabadwip pelted stones on a bus when it arrived in the town carrying migrant workers on Friday night. Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation. In another incident, an army jawan was attacked by neighboring villagers in Santipur when he returned home on a vacation. The district administration advised him home quarantine. However, the local residents tried to prevent him which led to a scuffle when the jawan was allegedly beaten up. He later lodged a complaint at the Santipur police station. No person has so far been arrested in this connection.
