Plassey, Jan. 16: Armed Trinamul Congress supporters today attacked BJP activists who took part in a motorbike rally and injured 3 of them in Nadia’s Plassey while they were heading towards Murshidabad along the NH34. The violent Trinamul supporters beaten up the BJP activists with sticks and bamboo poles while the police personnel deployed by the district administration mutely watched atrocities until a ‘Rapid Action Force’ team lathi-charged and dispersed the Trinamul supporters to clear the way for the rally.
The Trinamul supporters later retaliated by attacking the police personnel and threatened them of dire consequences. In Krishnanagar Trinamul’s youth wing organised a motor bike rally accusing the BJP of “unleashing” terror in the state through the motorbike rally.
The violence that erupted in Plassey Phulbagan more on NH34 stalled traffic movement in Kaliganj-Krishnanagar stretch for over 30 minutes.
The 3 injured activists include party’s Nadia Kisan Morcha president Bipad Biswas, a resident of Kulgachi village near Krishnanagar, who suffered multiple injuries and given five stitches. Two other injured activists were identified as Pulak Majumder and Kalidasi Biswas, who were provided first aid at a private clinic in Kaliganj and later taken to Berhampur Medical College.
The much controversial two-wheeler rally of the BJP resumed journey on Monday from Calcutta after it was stalled
for two days following a clash on Friday a little after it was commenced from Swami Vivekananda’s ancestral home in Simla Street. Yesterday state BJP president Dilip Ghosh and all India general secretary Rahul Sinha flagged off the rally afresh with over 200 motor bikes joined it despite the state government filed a fresh petition urging the Calcutta High court to stop it.
The rally reached Krishnanagar on Monday afternoon, where the participants took the night break. It resumed journey today morning at about 11.30 and reached Plassey at about 12.30pm, when the armed Trinamul activists attacked it at Phulbagan more.
Biswajit Ghosh, a BJP leader in Plassey said: “It was a pre planned attack. Armed with bamboo and sticks they blocked our way and started raising inflammatory slogans and attacked us. RAF personnel finally lathi charge to clear our ways, but by the time five of our activists were injured”.
Kaliganj block Trinamul leader Jeeban Mukherjee, however, denied allegations. He said: “Our supporters were peacefully protesting BJP’s bike rally and showing them black flag, but it was BJP activists who infuriated the situation with abusive slogans. Our supporters protested this only. None was beaten up”.
